UnitedHealthcare of Arizona won’t participate in Obamacare health care exchange

UnitedHealthcare of Arizona appears to be the only major insurance company that won’t be participating in the state health insurance exchange as part of Obamacare.

UnitedHealthcare officials said they want to hold back a bit to see how the exchanges play out as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act unfolds and before entering the market.

A preliminary list of carriers that have been identified as possible participants include:

Aetna Inc., Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Inc., Cigna HealthCare of Arizona, Humana Inc., HealthNet of Arizona, Compass CO-OP and University of Arizona Health Plan.

A spokesman for the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid said the agency is not yet in a position to confirm any insurers’ names.

The state exchange is expected to begin enrolling individuals and small businesses in October, but the CMS spokesman said it won’t be until August or September when those insurance companies will be announced.

The Compass CO-OP is new to the scene. It is a nonprofit created to offer a health plan on the state insurance exchange.

The CO-OP received a $93 million loan from the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid to launch in January 2014.

That award is part of a $1.2 billion loan package to 14 nonprofits offering coverage in 14 states.
